Artist Statement
In Case I Die was painted in the months following my Dad’s death in August 2024. I realized that my mum, who is my biggest fan, doesn’t own any of my large works. I’ve been meditating on my own mortality a lot since watching my Dad get really sick and then die. I thought, “better paint her something before I die too!” In my experience, the pendulum swings between grieving my immense loss and laughing about how ridiculous life and death truly are.
This series is a playful experiment in regards to mark making and rendering. Some paintings are built with very thin layers, while others play with thick opaque strokes. Some trees are rendered with strong linear brush strokes while others flow organically and get lost in the forest. My goal for these works was to play and to enter flow state. Typically, I just try to resolve the image I’m painting, but I’m now trying to be more embodied in my art practice.
This landscape series is heavily inspired by my love of the outdoors. Some works in this series are painted from experiences of other outdoor enthusiasts and some works are based on my own Frankenstein fantasy collage of what I wish my outdoor experience could be. As I continue to paint, my hiking bucket list gets longer and longer. Each title in In Case I Die odes to an experience pertaining to my Dad, death, or life after a loss.
